My Grammar

Team sports teach our students about commitment and how to work together, while individual sports develop confidence and resilience.

Each term, Junior Grammar hosts before or after school training clinics for boys and girls to develop their skills across a range of sports.

Regular term-time clinics include Woolworths Cricket Blast, AFL Auskick, Brisbane Roar Active (Football), NetSetGo, Hot Shots Tennis Coaching and Swim Squad.

For our girls, Junior Grammar has been a proud member of the Queensland Girls Primary Independent Schools’ Andrews Cup Association since 2012. We compete in the interschool competition each year against the top schools in the south-east region in sports including swimming, athletics, cross country, touch football, basketball, softball, netball and tennis.

For our boys, we host dedicated Gala Days each term and invite boys from schools around the region to participate in activities such as Rugby Union, Rugby League, AFL, Golf, Soccer and Cricket. Often these days attract special guests from Queensland’s leading sporting clubs, with Brisbane Roar, NRL and Queensland Reds players leading the boys through some drills in the past.

Informal opportunities for sports and outdoor play also abound, thanks to Junior Grammar’s extensive sporting facilities, natural playspaces, dedicated ovals and large expanses of grass.

At any given lunchtime, boys and girls can be seen partaking in a soccer game, playing tag in the rainforest, climbing totem poles or swinging from the gymnasium bars in the playground. Mr Millis’s ever-popular soccer session in the gym every Thursday sees many a red face return to the classroom after the lunch bell has rung!

Opportunities for involvement in co-curricular sport are well supported by our rigorous physical education curriculum, culminating in four annual Interhouse Carnivals. The carnivals see the five houses of the Junior School – Armitage (yellow); Carter (purple); Connell (pink); Hunt (red) and White (green) – contest the sports of Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics and Ballgames with keen, yet always friendly, rivalry.

First-class sporting facilities

Students who show talent in their sporting endeavours have access to first-class facilities, experienced and well-credentialed sports coaches and district and regional sports teams.

Our double multipurpose court gymnasium with international standard ceiling height is used extensively for Physical Education classes, training and competitive matches, with a dedicated mezzanine viewing area for supporters.

The Athletics Oval includes a 400 metre running track, Long Jump pit, Discus and Shot Put circles, as well as training areas for Javelin and High Jump.

Additional facilities available to the students of Junior Grammar include a full-size Hockey and Touch Football field, four fields for training, and two cricket pitches.

Our five-lane, 25 metre heated pool is used for squad training and swimming lessons.

For tennis, netball and volleyball playing students who compete on different surfaces and at various times, the School has plexi-pave tennis courts (with lights), a plexi-pave netball court, and a synthetic grass volleyball court.
