Swimming

Swimming is a great way for your child to develop lifelong skills, refine their technique and most importantly have fun in the water. We cater for a variety of skill levels for all our boys and girls from Learn to Swim through to Gold Squad.

Learn to Swim

The Learn to Swim (LTS) program offers swimming lessons to both internal and external students. It is the start of a swimmers pathway and journey within the Ipswich Junior Grammar School’s swimming program. The LTS program consists of six assessment based levels to ensure the individual development of all swimmers is within a consistent approach to the essential swimming techniques and skills required for each stage of the program. Each level needs to be completed prior to the swimmer progressing onto the next phase of the swimming program.

Junior Development Program

The Junior Development Program consists of two levels, Junior Development and Junior Performance. These levels are known as Level 7 and Level 8 within the swimming program, respectively. It’s at this level that the swimmer transfers from a Learn to Swim approach, which focuses on developing techniques and skills, into an environment that focuses on competitive swimming. During Level 7 and Level 8, the swimmer is introduced to speed and endurance based training. This is the start of the competitive swimming pathway.

Squads

Squad swimming consists of three swimming levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Squads

Bronze (Level 9)

The Bronze Squad is also known as Level 9 within the school swimming program. The Bronze Squad is intended for students predominately in primary school, e.g. 9 years and older, and for those students which have completed all the technical skills associated with the Junior Development Program (Levels 7 & 8). During the Bronze Squad level, students begin to demonstrate the skills and techniques attributes required to commence swimming competition, as this form part of the Long-Term Athlete Development.

Silver (Level 10)

The Silver Squad is also known as Level 10 within the school swimming program. The Silver Squad is intended for students predominately in senior school, e.g. 12 years and older, and for those students which have completed all the skills associated with the Bronze Squad. During the Silver Squad, students begin to maintain the skills and techniques attributes required to commence swimming competition, as per the Long-Term Athlete Development.

Gold (Level 11)

The Gold Squad is also known as Level 11 within the school swimming program.  The Gold Squad is intended for students predominately in senior school, e.g. 12 years and older, and for those students which have completed all the skills associated with the Silver Squad. During the Gold Squad, students maintain the skills and techniques attributes required to compete at a swimming competition, as per the Long-Term Athlete Development.

Strength and Conditioning

Strength and conditioning training has become increasingly popular within the modern world of competitive swimming. Strength and conditioning training for swimmers can be defined as the physical and physiological development of swimmers for superior performance in the water at elite levels. The role of strength and conditioning training is to use exercise to specifically improve performance and speed in the water to maximise performance results.
